Fasziniert von heidnischer Vergangenheit

Sein letztes Demo erhielt die programmatisch zu verstehende Botschaft aufgedruckt: „This record is dedicated to the Germanic and the Norwegian Black Metal scene!“ – und wahrlich, seine böse rumpelnden Old School Schwarzstahlkreationen sind tief in der Historie dieses faszinierenden Genres verwurzelt. Die Rede ist von Ketzerdenker und Multiinstrumentalist Nazgul, welcher dem Bandnamen erstmals 1998 Leben einhauchte. Ursprünglich im sonnigen Kapstadt in Südafrika lebend, siedelte der leidenschaftliche Black Metal-Maniac mittlerweile nach Deutschland über – korrekte Tat, denn das hier oftmals anhaltend nasskalte Klima passt doch auch viel besser zu solcherlei musikalischem Treiben. Fanatische Untergrundhörer, welche über die Kultwerke von Genre-Vertretern wie beispielsweise Burzum, Sort Vokter und Ildjarn tagsüber schwärmen und nachts davon träumen, könnten sich gut für die passionierten Kreationen von Wrath erwärmen – zumal die Lyriken der Lieder bis an den Rand gefüllt sind mit heidnischen Bekenntnissen und Sehnsüchten nach den guten alten Zeiten der ehrenreichen Vorväter. Im Jahr 2005 nach ärgerlicher christlicher Zwangszeitrechnung ist davon freilich nicht mehr viel übrig, doch darin ein Album wie „Viking” zu veröffentlichen, ist sicherlich nicht das Schlechteste, was man dem geld- und materialismusgierigen Zeitgeist entgegen setzen kann.

„Als Mensch ist meine Seele tief mit der Kraft der Mutter Erde verbunden. Als Persönlichkeit bin ich jemand der Aufrichtigkeit und Entschlossenheit nahe am Herzen trägt. Daher war es ganz natürlich, dass die rohe Energie und Achtung für stimmungsvolle Atmosphäre mich anziehen würde“, diktiert mir der Musikant zu Beginn in den Block.

Seine Musik war für ihn schon immer eine Zuflucht, wie der Kerl anschließend bekennt. „Ich wollte mich in den Träumen der Pagan Epoche verlieren, der nächtlichen Feuer und wo man im ersten Morgengrauen sehen kann wie der Frost die getöteten Feinde bedeckt hat. Ja, die Welt ist wirklich schrecklich geworden. Völlig verschmutzt. Und jetzt scheint es mir als ob die Erde stirbt und das ist traurig. Und doch gibt es immer noch wunderschöne Fleckchen, von denen unsere Seele in den Bann gezogen wird. Ich denke hier an den Schwarzwald im Süden von Deutschland wo eine Freundin, Nattsvart, wohnt. Ich habe sie mal besucht und hatte so die Gelegenheit die majestätische Kraft der unendlichen dunklen Wälder zu erleben. Mein Aufenthalt dort war sehr inspirierend, der Höhepunkt war die Produktion von meiner neuen CD 'Misanthropic Hate Spirits Of The Black Forest.' Ich werde die Aufnahme im Studio wahrscheinlich gegen Ende 2007 durchziehen. Das ganze Album hat eine starke melancholische Atmosphäre und meistens ein mittelmäßiges Tempo.“

Seit der Veröffentlichung von „Viking“ hat Nazgul schon wieder eine Unmenge an Musik kreiert – Lieder, die gleich für mehrere Alben reichen würden. Ohne Zweifel, er ist süchtig danach, solcherlei Klänge zu kreieren: „Ich bin es sogar ganz sicher. Ich habe beinahe jede Nacht neue Ideen für Songs. Obendrein habe ich auch noch viele Songs beziehungsweise Demos, die hier herumliegen und lediglich noch in ein außergewöhnliches Hörerlebnis geformt werden müssen. Mein Hintergedanke ist immer: 'OK, Nazgul wenn dieses Album fertig ist, dann musst Du unbedingt ein Label finden und wenn keiner Interesse daran hat, dann ist das auch in Ordnung. Ich werde das dann einfach aufheben und weiter neue Songs fürs nächste Album komponieren. In der ersten Instanz mache ich Musik für mich selber und wenn die Fans das genießen, dann ist es ganz toll. Der einzige Nachteil ist der, wenn das zweite Wrath-Album nun die Öffentlichkeit erreicht, dann arbeite ich schon am vierten Album – und somit zeigt das Material, was dann frisch veröffentlicht ist, nicht wirklich, wie ich meine Musik inzwischen entwickelt habe. Aber das Wichtige ist und bleibt, dass das Album auch gut ist.“

Was das Line Up von Wrath anbelangt, darüber gibt es eine wichtige Neuerung zu berichten. „Da ich Wrath bislang ganz alleine darstelle, kann man wohl bislang nicht von zwischenmenschlicher Atmosphäre reden. Allerdings wird jetzt Nachtgarm, der Vokalist von der Gruppe Negator für Wrath das Schlagzeug spielen, während wir meine Stücke üben. Ich werde auch noch Session-Gitarristen und einen Bassisten suchen.“

Für Nazgul ist es immer ein bisschen komisch, seinen eigenen Stil zu beschreiben, denn der vereint laut Auskunft des Musikanten viele unterschiedliche Strukturen. „Gerade wenn man glaubt das Album geht in Richtung Evil Rock nimmt ein Song plötzlich eine Wendung ins Depressive wie ein Todestrieb. Ich probiere nie einen besonderen Stil zu spielen, sondern es entwickelt sich einfach, wenn ich die Gitarre richtig hart bearbeite – je härter, desto besser wird dann meistens das entsprechende Lied. Trotzdem sehe ich mich nur als Durchschnitt in Sachen Gitarrespielen.“

Der Wrath-Mann mischt eben sehr viel zusammen – vor allem in den Riffs und dem Schlagzeug. Wir erfahren: „Es gibt eine offensichtliche Huldigung an Thrash Metal in so manchen meiner Tracks. Deren Stil ist dann ähnlich wie auf dem 'Viking'-Album, aber ganz bestimmt beeinflusst von Bathory – um nur mal einen Bandnamen zu nennen. Als ich noch jünger war, habe ich meistens Slayer-Alben nachgespielt, ich war eine Zeitlang ziemlich besessen mit deren Riffs und Texten. So würde es mich nicht wundern wenn deren Einfluss auch in meiner Musik durchklingt. Die anderen Einflüsse stammen natürlich vom Black Metal der 90er.“
Daher ist eigentlich jedes Wrath-Album total anders und doch bleibt so Manches darin auch gleich, so Nazgul. „Beispielsweise bin ich gerade dabei, Wrath`s selbst betiteltes Album zusammenzustellen und dieses Album nimmt wieder die gleiche Atmosphäre an wie 'Viking', mit sehr schnellen Songs und einem oder zwei dunklen depressiven Songs. Aber diesmal gibt es so viel mehr, es sind glatt 15 Tracks dafür vorgesehen. Das Demo für 'Hating jESUS' ist auch schon fertig. Ich hoffe, dieses Material bald mit anderen Musikern einzuüben. Das Grundthema dieses Albums ist ganz einfach `fuck god`. Ich hatte Lust, einfache aber starke Songs zu komponieren, die so richtig die Lügen aus dem Christentum rausschlagen. 'Misanthropic Hate Spirits Of The Black Forest' ist wie erwähnt hauptsächlich ein Midtempo-Album mit ausgedehnten, hypnotischen und einfachen Gitarrenriffs. Dieses Album liegt mir besonders am Herzen. Darüber hinaus habe ich wie gesagt bestimmt noch drei komplette Alben fertig, bis jetzt unbenannt, die auch noch richtig zusammengestellt werden müssen.“

Seine lyrischen Konzepte bewegen sich mehr und mehr in Richtung völliger Dunkelheit und depressiven, dämonischen Wintern. „Aber Pagan Einflüsse werden auch immer auf Wrath-Alben bleiben, denn im Kern bin ich ein Heide, der das Christentum anspuckt und sich von dem Weg der Heiden inspirieren lässt. Wenn ich traurig bin, kommen langsame melancholische Songs zustande, und wenn ich voller Wut bin, dann natürlich die niederschmetternden, schnellen Tracks.

Sein größter Wunsch für das Jahr 2007 ist es, endlich mal mit einem Live-Auftritt loszulegen. Daher: „Also, dieses Jahr müsste das für Wrath klappen. Ich fühle es schon so in mir, als ob tausende von Dämonen probieren, aus mir heraus zu kommen um ihre, die Christen lästernden Schreie los zu lassen. Mein Ziel ist mit Session-Musikern einige Gigs in ganz Deutschland zu spielen.

Abschließend erkundigte ich mich noch über das Denken dieses Umtriebigen über die heutige Black Metal-Szene an sich. Der bekennt: „Ich stehe eigentlich gar nicht in der Szene und kann darum auch keine großen Bemerkungen darüber machen. Ich komme wie gesagt aus Kapstadt, Südafrika, und so um 1998 gab es dort kaum oder keine Black Metal-Szene, nur eine kleine Gruppe von Individuen fühlte sich von der Musik angesprochen. Ich hatte ungefähr vier Freunde, die genauso besessen waren wie ich mit diesem eiskalten Sound. Im Endeffekt bin ich mehr ein Einzelgänger und habe wenig Interesse in Gruppen herumzuhängen. Mir passt es eben bestens, alleine im Dunkeln mit einer Kerze zu sitzen und im Schatten des Lichtens meine Songs zu üben oder neue Kreationen in die Welt zu rufen. Logisch, das ich es auch ab und zu mal toll finde, unter Menschen zu gehen, mit ihnen deren Ansichten zu diskutieren oder die eine oder andere Untergrund-Band auf der Bühne zu sehen, aber ich halte das in Grenzen, denn der Hauptfokus ist und bleibt meine eigene Musik. Über das Bisschen aus der Szene, was ich mitkriege, kann ich nur sagen, dass die Flame in vielen Black Metal-Leuten noch immer hell brennt. Es gibt eben noch immer viele Fanatiker, die diese Musik verstehen und respektieren – und das ist Klasse. Danke dir, Markus, für Dein Interesse in Wrath. His latest demo „Savage Beauty“ contained the message: „This record is dedicated to the Germanic and the Norwegian Black Metal scene!“ – and truly, his old school black steel-creations are rooted deep into the history of this genre. Those of the ones, which love moody arts from acts as Burzum, Sort Vokter and Ildjarn, could find Wrath´s creations interesting. Mastermind and multi-instrumentalist Nazgul did the foundation of Wrath in 1998, in Cape Town, South Africa. Meanwhile he is living in Germany. The lyrics of his compositions are massive filled with pagan beliefs and heathenish longings. The year 2005 saw the release of his latest album-effort „Viking”.

Nazgul, who are you as a person, as a character – and why you do especially this arch-black kind of music?

„As a person my soul is deeply rooted in an appreciation for mother earth and its misanthropic power. As a character I am simply a person who holds virtues such as honour and determination close to his heart. It was only natural that I would be attracted to Blackmetal`s raw power and attention to strong atmospheres.”

Do you see your music as a possibility to escape the daily insanity on this globe? Btw.; what s your opinion about the world s situation 2007? In my thoughts the mankind has never been mental sicker before.

„Yes my music has been an escape for me right from the beginning. I really wanted to lose myself in dreams of a pagan era where fires burned all night and frost would cover the slayen enemies at first light. Yes the world has really turned into a sick place, full of pollution. And now the earth indeed seems to be dying which is sad. But there are still some places on this earth that are simply beautiful and spell binds the soul with its misanthrope. I refer to Schwarzwald in the southern part of Germany. My friend Nattsvart lives down there and I was able to visit for a short time to experience the majestic power of the vast dark forests. Alot of inspiration was gained from this trip, the culmination of course was the album 'Misanthropic Hate Spirits Of The Black Forest' . I will enter the studio probley around the end of 2007 to do the final recordings. The whole album has a very powerful melancholic atmosphere to it and is mid tempo for the most part. „

You did recordings of new albums without any releasing plans in the background are you addicted to making music?

„I suppose I am. I always have new ideas about song arrangements almost every night. I have a great deal of song demos just lying around that still need to be properly organised into a possessive listening experience. I always think in the back of my mind, `ok, Nazgul when this album is finished you find a label to release it and if no one cares about releasing it, then thats fine with me to`. I will just store it along with all the other songs. and then carry on creating new songs for the next album. I always make the music for myself first and if fans enjoy it thats great. The only drawback of not being able to get official releases as the albums are finished, is that by the time album no. 2 comes out I'm working on no.4 already so the release date never really represents where I am at that point in time musically. But its fine, as long as the album is good.Thats what matters to me most.“

When you look back to the beginnings of Wrath, has been all developed right after your plans?

„Everything has work out the way I imagined it. The only thing left is to begin a long demonic tour!“

How is the chemistry in the band currently, any important news about the line-up?

„Well seeing as I am the only member there is no chemistry. Nachtgarm the vocalist from Germany`s Negator has recently joined Wrath for band rehearsals. He will take care of the drumming. I will search for session guitar and bass players.“

In which way the musical style of Wrath has been found by you? Please comment the process of your songwriting!

„It´s weird for me to try and explain my style of black metal. It has alot of different structures. Just when you think the album is going the way of a Evil Rock record then suddenly it slips into a suicidal depressive track. I don't try to play a certain way. I Just start strumming the guitar as hard as I can and soon a song is formed.The harder I play the better the song will be. I've never thought of myself as a guitar player and I still don't. If I had to rate myself I would say average.“

„I mix alot of different influences into my drum patterns and guitar riffs. I think there is quite an obvious homage to thrash metal in some of the tracks on the self titled. The style on that record is really the same as on 'viking' but there is definitely alot more homage to Bathory style riffs to name a few. I also listened mostly just to Slayers albums for a time when I was growing up. I was quite obsessed with the riffs and lyrics. So it doesn't surprise me that some of my songs are showing that influence now. As for the rest of my musical influences they are mostly early 90`s blackmetal of course.”

Are any specific differences of the new material to the foregone albums to tell?

„Well… each album is quite different but some stay the same. Wrath`s self titled album which I'm busy mixing actually, continues the same atmospheres of Viking with fast songs and one or two slow depressive ones. The only difference this time around is that there is alot more of them! There will be about 15 tracks on this album. 'Hating jESUS' has all the demos complete. And I hope to start band rehearsals on this material soon. The theme of this album is really just straight forward fuck god music. I really just felt like making simple but strong songs that would kick the lies out of Christ. 'Misanthropic Hate Spirits Of The Black Forest' mostly a mid tempo album with sprawling leads over hypnotic simple guitar riffs. This album is especially close to my heart. And at least two other as yet un-named full length albums that need to be properly finished.”

Please describe the readers the lyrical conception of Wrath & please tell me some lyrical influences!

„My lyrical themes have shifted their focus to be more about plain utter darkness and extreme depressive demonic winters. But there will always be pagan influenced songs on Wrath albums. Because at the heart of it, Wrath is a pagan entity spitting in the face of whole Christianity. I draw most of my inspiration from the dreams I have of my ancestors and the pagan way.“

„It´s quite simple really, when I feel mournful which is quite often, slow melancholy songs are created. When I'm angry and full of rage then fast Christ crushing tracks are invoked.”

„If by ancient mental powers you mean pagan mythology I would say I will always be influenced by the pagan past.”

„To play live! Haha, this damn year Wrath must play live! I feel as though I have a thousand demons inside of me trying to claw their way out to scream their blasphemous hymns! I make it my goal this year to finally get some session musicians together and do some gigs around Germany.”

„As I said before, playing live this year is a very definite plan of mine. And now with Nachtgarm on drums leaving only a bassist and guitarist to be found, I see even more probability of a live performance.”

„I'm quite removed from what the black metal scene is today. And I was never really involved in any black metal scene to speak of. I hail from Cape Town which is in South Africa where in around 1998 there was no real black metal scene or at least not any that I knew of. There was really only a very small group of people that liked this music. I myself only had about 4 friends who were completely obsessed like I was, with this new icy cold metal. All I know is I've never actively tried to get involved in the scene these days. And that is purely because I am quite a loner and have never been that interested in going to lots of gigs and hanging out. I'm quite happy to just sit by myself alone in darkness with just a candle burning away the shadows and practice my songs. I never stop creating music. But sure I like to socialise once in awhile. I feel it is important to have good conversations and hear others views on various subjects. And sure its great to go and watch your favourite obscure band to. But I try to limit myself by how much I do those things because I always want alot of time and focus just for myself and my music.
From the little I have seen and heard I would say the flame still burns in many black metal people. There is still alot of people out there who have great respect for this music , and I think thats great of course.”
